Many studies indicate an abnormal processing of superoxide (O-) free radicals in the keratoconic cornea resulting in corneal damage as a result of oxidative stress (OS) in the development and progression of this disease.

As cited in numerous scientific studies from around the world, (many of which are posted on this website for your perusal [See The Science Behind our Products heading on the top of this page], keratoconic corneas seems to lack the ability to self-repair the cumulative oxidative damage easily repaired by normal corneas. Like any tissues in the body, the cornea creates many harmful byproducts of cell metabolism called free radicals. Normal corneas, like any other body tissue, have a defense system in place to neutralize these free radicals so they don’t damage the collagen stromal layer, the structural part of the cornea, weakening it and causing the cornea to thin and bulge.

 

Since the keratoconic cornea does not possess the ability to eliminate the free radicals, they accumulate in the tissue and can ultimately cause structural damage resulting in a change in corneal shape, loss of corneal clarity and subsequently a loss of vision.
